How did people in Fallout 3 survive without being turned into Ghouls?
So I was just thinking about Fallout 3, and I was wondering; how did residents of Megaton or Bigtown or Rivet City originally survive WITHOUT turning into ghouls? And I know that residents of Bigtown are from Little Lamplight, but it would seem THEY would turn into ghouls, as people who took refuge in the sewers or subways turned into ghouls. Plus, it would also seem that they might turn into Super Mutants because of the proximity of Vault 87 and the FEV that it contained.
And for that matter how are Raider's not ghouls? I was thinking that all of these people would have to have been descended from people out of a vault, but then, if you go to Vault 101 you will see skeleton's outside that say "LET US IN F*CKERS!" and such. So obviously they didn't allow them in.
But then there are empty vaults...anyway, can you answer my questions?
The bombs fell over 200 years ago. So in that time it gave mankind some time to reproduce.
Atomic bombs have a range to which they will cause damage. Some people maybe weren't in vaults, but maybe they were outside the blast zone.
Others that were lucky to be in a Vault were left out at some point. But in some vaults Raiders broke in, or they killed each other in the vault.
Since bombs most likely wouldn't have hit everyone people could traveled to the DC area just like the Brotherhood of Steel did. Since food would run out, most people would go to find other people and search for food and water in the bigger cities.
The children in Little Lamplight were protected by solid rock. The radiation would never get to were they were. Sewers on the other hand should give some protection, but not enough.
Depending on where some people were at the time the bombs fell would explain how they survived.
